Glossary

This glossary contains some of the more commonly used terms relating to websites, website hosting and content management systems. You may also find our Search Assistance Glossary and Consulting Glossary useful.

B2B

An abbreviation for Business to Business, generally refers to relationships between businesses. For example, a B2B website would be a website that is built specifically for business to business transactions, rather than Business to Consumer (B2C) transactions.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data which may travel inward and outward through a connection.

It is often measured in speeds of Kb/S (kilobits per second - not to be confused with KB/S, kilobytes per second). Data travelling outward (upstream) is generally slower than data travelling inward (downstream).

The term bandwidth may also be used to describe bandwidth limits. For example, typical Internet connections have a monthly download and upload limit (measured in GB or MB). When this limit is exceeded, a connection may be slowed or the owner may be charged.

CMS

Abbreviated term for Content Management System. A system used by website content editors to change and update the content (text & images) of their website.

Database

A database is simply a collection of data.

Programs communicate with databases to retrieve records of data to display or work with. Databases sit behind dynamic websites, as well as many other programs (such as a program which might be used in a video store to record customer details among other things).

We are experts in database architecture, and all of our websites run efficiently alongside databases. Please contact us for more information on how we can use these skills to help your business.

Domain Name Maintenance

We can help you acquire the domain name you want (e.g. "www.greatbargains.com.au"), and will ensure it remains active and does not expire.

Flash

Flash is a technology typically used to display animated (and, potentially, interactive) content on a website. It was originally created by Macromedia and is now owned by Adobe.

Ask is about our affordable Flash banners!

Note: While some websites may be developed entirely in Flash, overusing the technology results in less effective SEO.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a tool that can be used to generate detailed reports focused around the number of users who have viewed a website.

We use Google Analytics so that our customers can see exactly how well their website is serving them.

HTML

HTML is an abbreviation of HyperText Mark-up Language.

HTML is read by web browsers (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) and affects how a web page will be displayed.

All web pages contain HTML; depending on the web browser which you are using, you may be able to right-click a page and select "View Page Source" to see the HTML behind it.

In combination with more powerful technologies, we use HTML to develop exceptional websites for our customers.

Hosting

Hosting refers to the service of storing a website on a server and allowing the Internet access to it.

BHC offers competitive website hosting!

J2EE

J2EE is an abbreviation of "Java 2 Platform: Enterprise Edition," a technology developed by Sun Microsystems.

This Java platform is used to create multitier applications, separating user interfaces (such as a web page) from system programs (such as a program designed to access a database and do calculations). These applications are typical of large enterprises.

At Black & Hayden Consulting, we provide expert J2EE advice and development services. Ask us more!

JSP

JSP stands for "JavaServer Pages," a technology developed by Sun Microsystems. It allows the integration of HTML with Java programming.

We use JSP to develop dynamic and secure websites.

MySQL

MySQL is a powerful, open-source, relational database management system (DBMS). It is the world's most popular database technology, favoured by small businesses.

A DBMS provides a means of communicating with, modifying or creating a database. MySQL uses SQL (Structured Query Language) to alter and retrieve data from a database.

SEM

SEM is an abbreviation of "Search Engine Marketing."

It represents the overall task of making a website more accessible through a search engine, therefore more likely to attract new users. Some of the marketing techniques involved in SEM include advertising on search engines as well as SEO (Search Engine Optimization - see entry in glossary).

Black & Hayden Consulting can help market your website on search engines, to make sure you're getting the most possible users!

Space Quota

Ordinary hosting services limit the amount of space your website can take up, which means you can't have all the content you want. Our "No Quota" policy means that you can have all the space you need, as long as the content is all used on your website!

Traffic

Traffic is a term used to describe the number of "hits" a website gets. Whenever a user enters a website, that counts as a hit.

Lots of traffic at once can cause a jam and slow down a website if the server hosting it isn't able to cope with the work.

We use Google Analytics to monitor the traffic of websites and make sure everything runs smoothly.

Virus Protection

Viruses can be a major problem for insecure systems, destroying data and potentially causing system failure.

We take measures to ensure that our systems stay virus free with top of the range and up-to-date anti-virus software, so our customers' data is never compromised.

Website

A website is a form of information delivered to users through the Internet. Websites provide a powerful advertising and information sharing tool, and have many other uses as well (such as online trading and communication).
